On April 6th 2025, Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin did something the NHL has never seen before. He broke Wayne Gretzky’s goal scoring record at 894 goals with him scoring No. 895 to officially pass Gretzky and become the greatest goal scorer in NHL history among multiple other superstars including, Nathan McKinnon, Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, David Pastrnak, Auston Matthews, and Connor Bedard. The shot was off of a pass by Capitals forward Tom Wilson to Dylan Strome, and to find Ovechkin from his office and fires it blocker side to beat Ilya Sorokin. In addition, Sorokin is Ovi’s 183rd goalie to have gotten scored on by him and is the only goalie to have gotten scored on once. Despite the Islanders eventually winning that game 4-1 in regulation, Ovi was the only star of the game and an exciting one to see history being made. In the building watching him were his wife, Nastasiya, his sons Sergei and Ilya, his mom Tatiana, and his father-in-law Kirill. Along with his family in attendance, NHL Commissioner Garry Betman and Gretzky himself were also in attendance and both gave speeches on Ovi and who he is as a player and how much his 895th goal means to him. All around, it was a great day of hockey and the new great one himself, Ovi, also gave a speech and said “without the fans, the trainers, coaches, I would never stand here and obviously I never pass the Great One.”
